U. S. Open at Oleander Park, Corpus Christi Bay
Dr. Charles Allen, a local windsurfing pioneer since 1981, created the U. S. Open Windsurfing Regatta, which attracted many amateur and professional racers to Oleander Point for the annual bay front competition. Many CCWA members raced in several classes while even more actively volunteered to work on the U. S. Open Committee, doing set-up and on-going operations required to conduct the event. From 1988-2002 Event Directors were Charles Allen, Dan Byrne, Elaine Motl while Gary Motl was the Venue Director.
nitially, Charles Allen secured a commitment from the Caller-Times as a sponsor. Frank Floyd, owner of Wind and Wave Watersports also obtained a sponsorship from Klepper sailboards. Both sponsors continued for the first five years then it became more difficult to get sponsors but the U. S. Open continued on an annual basis until 2010. Every year many professional windsurfers from across the nation and world competed in the U. S. Open and many returned several times because of the great local conditions.
n 1992, Elaine Motl, president of E. M. Marketing, started managing the U. S. Open. From 1994-1996 E. M. Marketing also began taping the event for the Prime Sports Network, which aired to 1.3 million households. In 1996, Elaine also helped make Corpus Christi the host site for the 4,000 member United States Windsurfing Association National Championships which ran concurrently with the U. S. Open.
Many CCWA members won in amateur and professional classes of the U. S. Open. Blanche Montelongo won the Amateur Women class in 1992 and 1993 and Jennifer Racette won various Amateur Women classes 6 times from 1994-2001. Guy Miller won in 6 classes including the Pro Masters in 1994, Mark Basset won the Pro Men class in 1994 and 1995. Other local amateur two time winners included Charles Allen, Chad Allen, Randy Yates, Dave Corpus, Michael Johnson and Olivier Jallias between 1993 and 2001. Our local talent won in at least one class every year except 1997 and 1998, unfortunately results are not available for 2002-2009.
By 2004, multiple sponsorship changes led to the Velocity Games. For several years kite surfing and windsurfing competition were consolidated into a single event, the U. S. Open Windsurfing Regatta and Kiteboarding Championship, which relocated to McGee Beach.
